Rene from her namesake design firm was kind enough to ask us to collaborate on their exhibition at Decorex earlier this year. Honestly, as a woman of colour myself, I love seeing women of colour in the design space. After chatting to Rene, I realized we align on so many things in design and in life. We asked her a few questions on how she moves in this space not only as a woman, but also a designer.
What does living beautifully mean to you?
Living beautifully means creating a warm and welcoming home that feels like a safe haven for my family. It’s about sharing laughter, love, and memories with the people I cherish most. As a woman, I strive to create a space that nurtures and comforts my loved ones, where we can be our authentic selves. For me, living beautifully is about the little moments – a home-cooked meal, a cozy movie night, or a lazy Sunday morning. The little moments are what make life special, and I’m all about finding joy in the everyday stuff we share together.
What is your favourite Spases piece and how did you style it?
My favorite piece is the Mady Mud Cloth Scatter Cushion from Spases. We recently used it in a safari lodge bedroom project, where it added a touch of local, handmade authenticity. The earthy tones and unique patterns beautifully complemented the natural elements, such as the timber curved headboard, patterned wallpaper, and earthy textured wall finish. I love how it brings a sense of cultural connection to the space, making it more memorable for guests. The handmade design ensures each piece is unique, adding character to any room.
Where do you find inspiration when it comes to your home or work?
I find inspiration in the beauty and richness of South African culture, history, and landscape. I try to stay authentic and local, drawing from the people, places, and stories that surround me. I’m inspired by the concept of finding beauty in what’s right in front of us and interpreting it in my own unique way. This approach allows me to blend traditional elements with international standards, creating a space that’s both rooted in my heritage and globally inspired. Whether it’s through art, textiles, or design, I love celebrating the essence of South Africa in my home and work.
